What It Means To Get “Burned” On A Surveillance

BY ANDY KAY

If you ever hire a private investigator to do a surveillance for you, you will likely have a conversation about not “getting burned.” If the PI does not mention the potential issue, I most definitely recommend bringing it up and discussing it with the PI. It is very important to understand your role in the case, and what to expect from the upcoming surveillance.

Surveillance Expectations for The Private Investigator You Hire

What is a surveillance?

A surveillance is when a subject is under active physical surveillance. When we are doing a surveillance, we are gathering all potential information. We are watching all of their moves, following them everywhere they go, identifying who they are with and recording everything they do. We provide written reports for our clients upon request. Some clients only want a verbal run down of what we observed, while others need a written report for their legal teams. Other times, clients simply ask for the video and photos that came from a surveillance with noted highlights that we believe are important.

Who performs a surveillance?

You should only hire a licensed investigator for any investigation, but especially for a surveillance. We have specialized investigators who are trained and focused on this type of investigation. They are experts at catching cheaters, frauds, and thieves. Our private investigators find anyone who is hiding where they are going or what they are doing. These specialized PI’s know how to naturally blend into their surroundings and they are trained in getting video footage and photos without being noticed.

Surveillance is done in cars and on foot. It is important to not get burned, or seen by the subject of the investigation.

What does it mean to get ”burned” on a surveillance?

When someone gets “burned” on a surveillance it means that they have been noticed by the subject or someone associated with the subject. Most of the time when this happens on an investigation, it is due to the client getting emotional and tipping off the subject that they are being watched. It rarely happens to our investigators, but on that rare occasion, we are forced to investigate a case in other ways.

Sometimes, we are able to wait some time, then switch out investigators. We do this with the awareness that the subject will be on the lookout for someone following them and watching them. This is not optimal, so we always strongly advise our clients to keep their cool. We tell them not let their anger get the best of them in the heat of the moment. It is so tempting to want to feel powerful and let someone who has hurt you know that you are taking control of the situation.

PI’s That Are Experienced and Licensed Are Less Likely To Get Burned

How do K&A investigators avoid getting burned?

We use best practices for following a vehicle, and we know how to blend in when following someone on foot. Sometimes we use multiple investigators on surveillance, depending on the situation and locations.

Without giving away some industry secrets, we can tell you this: there are certain ways to follow a vehicle without being noticed. The same goes for following someone on foot. We know the tricks of the trade and how to evade being noticed. This is why we are in such demand and so requested by law firms and returning clients.

Choosing The Best Private Investigator for Your Surveillance

Getting burned can happen to the best investigator, but it won’t happen often. Choosing a company that has seasoned PI’s that specialize in surveillance is of the most importance when it comes to following someone. Once someone has been tipped off to being surveilled, or a person has become aware they are being followed, it is very difficult to continue surveillance.

This is why we tell clients not to choose the cheapest PI for your surveillance needs. You may not get another chance to find out where they are going or who they are meeting. Make the moment count, and choose your PI wisely.
